POWER IN NUMBERS – HELP A CHILD IN NEED

by Dahlia Graham

If I can get 5,000 people to donate $10, Corazon de Dahlia could raise $50,000. That would be enough to fund our Center for the Promotion of Child & Family Development in Peru for an entire year! If you have already given to Corazon de Dahlia this year, you could play your part by posting this on your wall, inviting friends to the cause, or better yet, spreading the word about what we are doing.

What started out as an individual effort to paint and refurbish a school, establish a library, and contribute at a boys’ home, turned into the founding of an official, 501(c)3 non profit organization, which was born out of what I felt in my heart. Now, Corazon de Dahlia has a board both here, and in Peru, and we are evolving as we speak.

Saylla is an impoverished, agricultural town, with nearly 3,000 inhabitants. Unfortunately, as you tend to find throughout Peru, it is a town where alcoholism, child abuse, domestic violence, and job insecurity are prevalent.

Why give? We are offering a comprehensive program with academic and social enrichment to extremely impoverished kids and families. For example, Maria Luz was embarrassed to tell me that she walks more than one hour to school each day. Luis explained that he has six family members living in a one-bedroom home. Juanita comes from a family where her father is a farmer and her mother has a mobile stand where she sells candy and cigarettes outside of the school. Ripped sweaters, and dirty faces, chapped cheeks, hunger, and pain, are everywhere you look.
